There were smiles all round as students picked up their AS and A Level results at The Bournemouth & Poole College. The college’s Sixth Form were delighted with the success rates of 96.5%. It reflected the hard work of the students, who now have their next step for the future in place. An 86% pass rate for the AS students was particularly impressive against the uncertainty of the impact on results of the government’s A Level reforms. A subject of note was AS Level Chemistry where students achieved a 100% pass rate, more than 20% above the national average!
One of the refreshing aspects of the college’s Sixth Form success was the variety of careers that the students were choosing to go onto. Some via University and others through an Apprenticeship.
Phoebe Burton was thrilled to get the grades she needed to go onto do Adult Nursing at Bournemouth University. ‘I got my first choice, I can’t believe it. It’s a really competitive course, I’m speechless!’ And she wasn’t the only one celebrating their success.
Caitlyn Walters got the grades she needed to start her Digital Marketing Apprenticeship with LV= from September. She said, ‘I was thinking about University but decided I wanted to work for a while and learn on the job. It’s a year long Apprenticeship so I have the option to go to University afterwards if I want to.’
Salome Kiknadze is aiming for a career as a human rights lawyer, and was excited to get the grades to be able to study Law at Queen Mary’s University of London. ‘I got my first choice and I’ve always wanted to go into Law. I’ve also just got a job with The Refugee Council in London and have applied for Amnesty International.’
AS Level student Morgan Harris has had a tough year but with the support of his tutors has thrived and done exceptionally well. He’s about to start his second year and has a clear picture in his mind about what he wants to do next. He said ‘I think University can be costly so I definitely want to go down the Apprenticeship route. You get paid and get work experience, plus many offer the option to study a degree as well.
I want to go into Aeronautical Engineering so while I’m doing my second year will be looking for a company that I can do an Apprenticeship with. BAE Systems do amazing Apprenticeship options.’
Sorrell Linsley has an extra reason to celebrate. As well as getting the grades she needs to study Anthropology at the University of Sussex she’s also been granted a £3,000 bursary. She said ‘I’m so happy, it’s incredible. Last year I got an E in Geography and now I’ve got a B!’
Sarah Lane didn’t get the grades in the right subjects when she was at school but she’s done incredibly well since being at the college, and is setting her sights on the University of Surrey, ‘If I get these kind of grades next year I’ll be sorted. This last year my tutors at the college have really helped me.’
Jasmine Fry is heading for a very exciting career as she’s starting a Finance Apprenticeship for the government. ‘Getting a job is what’s important and I wanted to get into work as soon as possible. I like learning and I like working. I’ll be studying for an AAT alongside my Apprenticeship and will have options to do a degree. In 3 weeks I’ll be moving out by myself for the first time, it’s a massive step but exciting!’
The figures suggest that once again The College will be above the national average for A level performance.
