What courses can I do after this?
The HNC in Construction and the Built Environment, provides a route to Higher Education courses including HND, Foundation Degree or full Honours Degree. We work with various University Partners, enabling progression to the third year of five-year Part-Time degree courses, which result in a BSc (Hons). Further advancement to professional accreditation is also available.
The course is primarily aimed at people already employed within the construction industry. Specific careers will depend on the chosen pathway and our graduates gain employment in a wide range of organisations, both in the private and public sectors. These range from local authorities, housing associations and consultancies, to specialist contractors or large multi-service companies offering a range of design, build, finance and construction management services.

What do I need to apply
To do this course you should have...
one of the following:
- a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Construction and the Built Environment (or a related subject)
- Four GCSE (grade 4 (C) or above) including Mathematics and English or equivalent
- Other related Level 3 qualifications
- An Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further education institution
- Related work experience
- An international equivalent of the above

Costs
Employer to pay 5% training contribution depending on business size and age of apprentice. The government will pay the rest (95%) up to the funding band maximum.

Year 1
- Construction Technology
- Explain the terminology used in construction technology
- Describe the different techniques used to construct a range of substructures and superstructures, including their function and design selection criteria
- Identify the different types of civil engineering/infrastructure technology used in support of buildings
- Illustrate the supply and distribution of a range of building services and how they are accommodated within the building
- Science & Materials
- Review health & safety regulations and legislation associated with the storage, handling and use of materials on a construction site
- Discuss the environmental and sustainability factors which can impact on and influence the material choices for a construction project
- Present material choices for a given building using performance properties, experimental data, sustainability and environmental consideration
- Evaluate the performance of a given building in respect of its human comfort requirements
- Tender & Procurement
- Define what constitutes a tender and the information required for this process
- Explain the procedures and contractual arrangements for tendering
- Analyse the factors that affect the selection of construction procurement methods
- Calculate an estimate for a work activity
- Construction Practice and Management
- Describe the construction industry with reference to company structures and other activities
- Explain different types of construction companies in the market and their relationships within the tendering process
- Discuss the key stages in a construction project, and how Building Information Modelling informs the different stages
- Analyse how the construction industry has developed suitable collaboration strategies in support of greater recognition of Health & Safety
Year 2
- Measurement & Estimating
- Define standard measurement techniques used for taking-off quantities for estimating purposes
- Perform taking-off techniques in the production of a range of quantities for a structure
- Interpret the principles and techniques of estimating in compiling a final price
- Prepare an estimate for a work activity.
- Legal & Statutory Responsibilities
- Examine the process used to obtain planning permission for the construction and alteration of buildings
- Discuss the processes and regulations used to control design and to ensure safe buildings
- Assess the laws used to ensure that construction sites operate safely and consider adjoining land-users
- Analyse how the law of contract and land law are used to sell and lease land and buildings
- Project
- Formulate a project that will provide a solution to an identified problem
- Manage a project within agreed timescales and specification; documenting the process throughout
- Evaluate potential project management solutions
- Produce a project report and deliver a presentation of the final project outcomes
- Financial Management & Business Practices in Construction
- Explain the legal status of different types of building companies
- Explore different sources of finance available to a construction company and strategies used to manage finance
- Evaluate forms of company organisation within the contemporary construction industry
- Illustrate the different strategies used by a construction company to manage resources
