BA (Hons) Post Compulsory Education

My journey to become a teacher started when I enrolled onto a Childcare Apprenticeship at a nursery through the college. The Apprenticeship gave me a real insight into working with young people and made me realise that I wanted to explore further study and do a degree. So I enrolled onto the Foundation Degree in Early Years Services.
Doing a hands-on job I felt like I couldn’t go straight into university, but doing a degree at the college meant that I could work and study at the same time – getting experience on the job. The Foundation Degree also inspired me to move to a school so I could gain teaching experience in a different setting.
As I’m an older student, I wanted to stay close to home, I was settled here, plus I was familiar with the college anyway. I knew if I came here I would be able to still work and study, and have the university experience without moving away.
I've now completed the Foundation Degree and recently started the BA (Hons) Post Complusory Education Degree. The course is challenging, but it’s really rewarding. I’ve made so many new friends. The content is really enjoyable which keeps it exciting and engaging.
We usually have two modules at a time and we’ve done things like the role of play which was really interesting. We also learn about different theorists which we then apply them to practical situations at work.
My aspirations for the future – I have two years left of the BA (Hons) and then I’ll hopefully progress onto a school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT), or I could do something completely different. The Degree opens up so many opportunities.
I’d really recommend the college and the course. It’s a really helpful way of studying as well as gaining experience if you want to work and study at the same time.
