National Apprenticeship Week: Meet one of our boatbuilding apprentices

This National Apprenticeship Week, we had a chat with Ben, a 28 year old boatbuilding apprentice. Ben is completing his Level 3 apprenticeship with Honnor Marine – one of the largest boatbuilders in the country.

Bournemouth & Poole College: What were you doing before your apprenticeship?

Ben: I was previously a manager at a Language College which sadly closed due to the effects of Covid.

College: Why have you chosen an apprenticeship?

Ben: An apprenticeship is the best way nowadays to have a sustainable way of earning while learning. I attempted a traditional university degree but the guidance was lacking. Bournemouth & Poole College has been way more supportive. I’ve always loved getting hands on and doing things, and working at Honnor Marine was hands on straight away. It’s great because I get the theory at college, then apply it at work. I can ask for help from my employer, colleagues and managers, or from Bournemouth & Poole College.

College: So it was an alternative to the university route for you?

Ben: For me personally, it’s a hugely better alternative to University. I’m not just sat in lectures – I'm learning a craft practically, rather than learning just what you have to cover for exams and essays. I’m gaining the exact skills I need for the exact industry I’m working in.

College: That’s great – We know that apprenticeships can be an alternative route in to a career that suits lots of people. How’s it going?

Ben: Really, really well. I did go in a bit blind on certain aspects of the course, but I started two days a week at college. One day I focussed on wood skills, the other composites. I half expected to be sat in boring lectures, but right from day one I was doing stuff. I practically started boatbuilding before I even knew my course leaders name!

College: Fantastic! What are you learning?

Ben: I’m learning the two main modules still – in composites, I’m learning lamination of complicated shapes. In woodwork, I’m using and maintaining tools, and already working on the hull of a boat. It’s great because I’m picking up a lot of a health and safety theory and how it specifically applies to the marine industry. These are skills that every employer looks for – they're transferable.

College: And where do you hope it will take you?

Ben: Honestly, I’d really like to stick with Honnor Marine. They’re an amazing employer and are always looking to grow as a business. I’d like to finish my apprenticeship then look to become floor manager. There’s lots of expansion and growth, meaning there's lots of opportunity and I’m up for the challenge in the future. It’s really beneficial for me too as I’m working with people who have been in the industry for 20 years, so I’m gaining loads of knowledge and experience.

College: That's great - thank you Ben.
